Tottenham stadium stays – 18 Ashmount road, London.

I was in London to attend a friend’s birthday and so I did not have to leave early to get the last train home I tried to find a hotel close by – or on the night tube. Most of the chain hotels were excessively expensive then found this place on Expedia and it was on the night tube and not overly expensive.

The night cost me £118 (incl VAT). I did book via a cashback website, so I did get 8% of this back.

Arrival

The place is a short walk from seven sisters’ underground station on the Victoria line, so it is on the night tube.

Firstly, this is not exactly a hotel more a small studio bedsit in a house. Check in was contactless and you were asked to provide your mobile number so they could send you the instructions to check in about two hours before arrival. This came via WhatsApp so not sure how it would be sent if you don’t have this.

You are sent instructions that the keys not only to the front door but also to your room is in one of the key boxes next to the door and the code to open the one you need.

OK this was easy enough on getting in – it is quite dark. My room was on the first floor and the stairs were very steep and not very deep so if coming with a larger and heavy case this can be a problem. The stair carpet was tatty and is in need of replacement.

You can WhatsApp the owners if you need anything but to me this is not as convenient as having an actual front desk.

The room:

Ok the room had a kitchen area with a double induction hob and an oven, small fridge and a kettle. Some pans, crockery and cutlery are provided and there is a sink. Whilst there was some washing up liquid provided there were no tea towels. Now despite there being a kettle and cups, there was NO tea of coffee is provided. There is a Tesco (other supermarkets are available) close by so you can get your own fairly quickly, but I feel that this is a basic thing hotels etc should provide so this was a disappointment.

The bedroom area has a standard double bed and clean linens. There are some power points in convenient locations but one was loose and one screw securing it to the wall was missing – this is not, in my opinion safe, so I did not use this socket. The room was clean and there was a fan running in the room. As this was one of the heat wave weekends, I did appreciate this.

One thing I found annoying is that there were no curtains just a type of roller blind which could be moved to let about 50% of the light in to almost all the light in. This had me concerned about the morning but more on this later.

The bed was comfortable enough, but the mattress was a little soft for my taste – however I accept this is a personal thing. There was also a small sofa, a small table with two chairs. The ceiling lights were two sets of 4 bulbs. However, each set only had one bulb which was working so a bit more attention to this kind of thing is needed.

The shower room was an issue, it was clean but small, VERY small. I think the phrase to use was barely enough room to swing a cat. The cupboard over the sink had some toiletries in which
I suspect had been left by a previous guest other than this there were no toiletries such as shower gel provided so you will need to take your own. The shower did take a while to heat up and not the most powerful, but it did its job. The towels provided were a standard hotel type towel, but they were bath towels and not my preferred larger bath sheet but again this is personal taste.

The night’s sleep:

Ok there was an issue as soon as I got into bed. The duvet cover was one which zips up and the zip was broken so it was open, and the opening was at the top. So, a quick-change round of the duvet and this was solved – but should this have been allowed to happen?

Next back to the blinds, despite me setting them in the position to block out the most light they were highly ineffective at keeping the morning light out and this did have the effect of waking me up early in the morning – about 5:30 as the sun was coming up and through the blinds. This I did not appreciate so I would recommend taking an eye mask with you.

Breakfast:

None provided.

Checking out:

This is done by simply returning your keys to the key box scrambling the numbers and departing.

Value for money:

Well, this is London, so you do expect things to be a little more expensive and it was a weekend in June, but I still think this is overpriced.

Review and final score:

Checking in & out:  2/5

Room: 3/5

Facilities: 2/5

Quality of sleep: 2/5

Total: 9/20

Would I stay here again – unless basic things such as curtains at windows and the provision of basics like tea and coffee are sorted then at this price it is unlikely. This may be fine for one night or in the winter where the morning sun through the blinds will be less of an issue but just not for me.
